Marry Mubaiwa, the former wife of Zimbabwean Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, was released from remand on Tuesday in Harare after enduring a seven-year trial for alleged attempted murder.
General Constantino Chiwenga initially accused his former spouse of attempting to block his medical care in South Africa, leading to her arrest in 2019. The accusations centered around an alleged incident in Pretoria where she was accused of trying to kill him while he was hospitalized. Following the event, the vice-president traveled to China for four months of medical treatment.
The dismissal of the case occurred after prosecutors requested an additional one-month postponement to secure witnesses. In ordering the release, a magistrate noted that Mubaiwa faced significant physical, financial, and psychological harm throughout the legal proceedings, according to the state-owned newspaper the Herald.
Defense counsel criticized the protracted legal process, stating that the decision represented a delayed victory and that her client's constitutional rights had been compromised by the prolonged proceedings. Speaking outside the courthouse in the capital city on Tuesday, the lawyer noted that the defense team would respond if prosecutors attempted to restart the trial.
Following the ruling, Mubaiwa celebrated her freedom outside the court building. She expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that justice had been achieved and praising her legal representation.
General Chiwenga previously gained prominence in 2017 when he played a central role in the removal of former President Robert Mugabe from power.
